App downloads are falling while app spending rises: are web funnels changing the picture?
The latest mobile-market reports do not show consumers spending less overall. They show fewer downloads, higher spending and a growing shift in how subscription apps acquire and monetize users.
The headline needs a careful correction
“App spending dropped for the first time” is not what the latest global data says. Downloads declined, especially for games, but spending increased. The more useful story is that the app economy is becoming more selective: people install fewer apps, while a smaller set of subscription and AI products captures more revenue.
Where web funnels may fit
A web-to-app funnel lets a team explain the product, collect intent signals and present a subscription offer before or alongside the store install. FunnelFox reported that 82% of top-grossing mobile apps used web funnels in its 2026 report, with higher conversion and lifetime-value claims. That is an important signal, but it is vendor-produced and based on anonymized platform data, not a neutral census of every app.
